Project Overview
NCI Resources Limited engaged IceBubble to create a bespoke field data capture app with voice recording and data capture Application for over 150 field users with iPads.
IceBubble worked with the team at NCI to establish a specification for the app, and built a custom interface for their existing IBM Domino platform, that could also be adapted for planned future .Net developments.
Challenge
NCI Resources needed a field data capture app for over 150 field staff using iPads. The challenge wasn’t just building a mobile app from scratch — NCI had an existing IBM Domino platform that the solution needed to connect to, authenticate against, and integrate with seamlessly.
Finding a development partner with genuine Domino experience was a priority. A green-field build that ignored the existing infrastructure wasn’t an option — the new app needed to sit alongside and extend what NCI already had, not replace it.
The app also needed to capture surveys of over 1,000 questions, with the ability to show and hide responses dynamically and capture audio — a level of complexity that required careful specification and build.
Solution
Using our experience with HCL (then IBM) Domino, IceBubble built a cross-platform field data capture app using Microsoft Xamarin Forms, designed to work seamlessly with NCI’s existing infrastructure.
The app connected directly to the Domino platform, authenticating existing users and allowing field staff to complete surveys of over 1,000 questions on their iPads. Responses could be shown or hidden dynamically, and the app supported audio capture — giving field teams a genuinely flexible data collection tool.
The solution was built to be scalable and straightforward to manage, with survey setup and staff planning handled through the existing Domino web infrastructure rather than requiring a separate system.
Result
The result was a scalable app, with setup and management located in the existing Domino infrastructure.
IceBubble made it easy for the team to add and update their surveys and to plan work for their staff within the new web solution.
The field data capture app was delivered within agreed timescales and has since been used by over 150 field staff across NCI’s operations.
